Penn State’s Research Computing and Cyberinfrastructure (RCCI) organization hosts a variety of data and research related working groups comprised of research faculty, IT professionals, and administrative unit members. The Data Governance Working Group focuses on a wide range of topics related to data: data governance, data preservation, data dissemination, data security, the scientific data life-cycle, and in general any topic related to the governance of research data. According to RCCI’s latest annual report, the group is currently engaged in identifying data-related services, systems, processes, and policies at the University, and exerting positive influence on each of them; increasing cross-University cooperation and communications surrounding data-related topics; providing a broader understanding of the storage options available to researchers, the intended use of each storage option, the cost of each storage option, and the limitations and benefits of each storage option and promoting a greater understanding of data-related contractual issues, including issues surrounding compliance with federal guidelines for data protection and data dissemination.
