The Data Categorization Project (DCP) is a resource tool made available to Penn State researchers and affiliates that simplifies the data stewardship and secure data categorization processes. All Penn Sate employees are responsible for the information that they come into contact with and play an important role in safe-guarding that information. As a University, Penn State is legally responsible for all sensitive data that enters its system, including Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, personal medical data, and sensitive government-related research data.
The DCP provides information on how to categorize and safeguard data, where data is permitted to be stored, when it needs to be destroyed, and what the individual roles of faculty, staff, IT personnel, and researchers are in these processes.
